What is VCSEL?

Vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is a semiconductor laser diode. Unlike edge emitting laser diodes, VCSEL emits upward, so it can be easily packaged as a transmitter array containing hundreds of transmitters on a single chip.
